from Bethany Eckley Research Manager, CUF
I thought I might forward to you some research we have done at Church Urban Fund about how to grow and strengthen the credit union sector. The report is called ‘Money Speaks Louder than Words: credit unions and the role of the Church in tackling financial exclusion’.
The Department for Work and Pensions has said that in order to become sustainable, the credit union sector needs to grow from 1 to 2 million members in the next 5 to 7 years. The Church is well-placed to make a significant contribution to this growth.
Our research shows that churchgoers are twice as likely as others to support credit unions. Many believe that churches should actively support credit unions, in order to strengthen alternatives to payday loans. The research also identifies the steps that need to be taken to significantly increase membership of credit unions amongst churchgoers in future.
The full research findings will be presented at a General Synod fringe event at 1.15pm on Wednesday 12 February.
If you would like to attend this event, or if you would like to request hard copies of the Executive Summary, please do email me.
Very best wishes,
